Costume designer Nina Schelich is recognized for her unique ability to authenticate characters in any time period. She is respected for her ingenuity, grace, and genuine work ethic which she brings to every project.
In 2007, Schelich joined Local Scenic Artists 829, working as an assistant costume designer for the Sony/Mandate feature film, Nick and Nora’s Infinate Playlist, as well as Fox Searchlight’s The Secret Life of Bees.
Schelich has designed several independent feature films including Home, (premering at the 2008 Montreal Film Festival ) starring Marcia Gay Harden and Marianne Seldes, as well as Serenade Film’s The Narrows, premiering at the 2008 Toronto film festiveal. She also designed the New York Unit of the feature, Adventures of Power, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. Other feature film design credits include If I Didn’t Care, The Last Christmas Party, and East Broadway. Schelich’s creativity shines in three short films: GOD’S BEACH, which premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, MIDDLETOWN, and DREELAND.
After receiving a BA in fashion mercahndising from The Ohio State University, Schelich worked in the fashion industry for several years before moving to film. In 2002 Schelich began costume designing as an assistant, contributing her talent in the Merchant Ivory film HEIGHTS and in independent films: DUANE HOPWOOD starring David Schwimmer and Janine Garofalo, and SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER which debuted at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival.
Schelich says, “I have an observant and patient view of the world around me. I extract meaning from the strength and subtleness of life, create the visual elements needed to capture the essence of a character, and embody that person on film. Film is a fluid canvas; as a costume designer, I add the colors and textures to the moving images.”
Schelich is currently working on the educational television series, The Electric Company, that begins airing on PBS in February 2009.
